Key Stats: 3B Eguy Rosario 2-for-4, 2B, HR (5), BB; DH Tirso Ornelas 3-for-4, 2 2B; LF Bryce Johnson 3-for-4, 2B; CF Oscar Mercado 2-for-4, HR (8); LHP Jackson Wolf 6 IP, 4 H, 5 K; LHP Paul Fry 2 IP, H, 2 K; LHP Tom Cosgrove IP, K

Prospect Watch:  A trio of El Paso lefties combined on a five-hit shutout to claim a third straight win and the series victory over Round Rock. Jackson Wolf, who had given up 14 earned runs over just 8.2 innings in his last three starts, put together his best outing of the year, tossing six innings without a walk. The 25-year-old had given up at least two free passes in each of his first 10 starts. Though he topped out at 88 on the day, he racked up 12 whiffs on 50 swings and allowed just three balls in play over 95 mph off the bat. Wolf, who is on the Padres’ 40-player roster, sports a 5.83 ERA in his first pass at the Pacific Coast League. … Tom Cosgrove turned in his third straight appearance without allowing an earned run. After dominating big league hitters last season, the 27-year-old with a three-quarters arm slot struggled badly to find the same life on his sweeper and sinker this year. While the movement still isn’t back to where he thrived last year, Cosgrove is getting closer. … Eguy Rosario had another big day at the plate, connecting on a double and his fifth homer in 21 games. Rosario, 24, raised his line against right-handers in Triple-A to .288/.448/.596. Since his demotion, 15 of his 23 hits have gone for extra bases. … Coming off one of the best months of his career, Tirso Ornelas collected three more hits on Sunday, including a pair of doubles. The left-handed batter now sports a .297/.375/.484 with a career-best 16% strikeout rate. After starting the year putting almost 60% of his balls in play on the ground, Ornelas has now cut that to 48%.

Frisco RoughRiders 5, Missions 2

Key Stats: DH Robbie Tenerowicz 2-for-4, HR (4); 2B Clay Dungan 1-for-4, BB; 1B Brandon Valenzuela 1-for-4, BB; RHP Ryan Bergert 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 3 BB; RHP Francis Pena 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R (1 ER), LHP Jayvien Sandridge IP, 2 K; RHP Ethan Routzahn 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB; RHP Raul Brito 0.2 IP, 2 K

Prospect Watch: The Missions dropped their eighth straight and got swept in their series against Frisco. The team now ranks last in the league in virtually every offensive category. Their team OPS of .621 is 139 points behind the league-leading Tulsa Dodgers. Robbie Tenerowicz, signed as a 29-year-old minor league free agent last month, hit a solo homer for the Missions’ only extra-base hit of the game. He later added another hit. The rest of the lineup combined for three singles. … Righty Ryan Bergert got through the first five innings scoreless despite three walks as he induced six groundouts, including a pair of double plays. Having thrown only 58 pitches, he had a chance to go six innings for the second straight outing. He got the first two batters he faced in the sixth, but each saw five pitches, and then Corpus strung together three straight singles paired with a costly wild pitch that allowed two runs to come across. The 24-year-old righty has only struck out 11 over his last 25.2 innings of work as his trademark riding fastball has flattened out some this year. … Francis Pena, who blanked Frisco for two innings in his Double-A debut earlier in the week, didn’t record an out in his second crack at them. The righty, who was sitting 96-97 with his fastball, allowed three singles wrapped around a would-be sacrifice bunt that turned into a two-run throwing error. He was charged with one earned run but still owns a minuscule 1.16 ERA across two levels on the year.

TinCaps 5, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4

Key Stats: LF Tyler Robertson 2-for-3, HR (5), BB; 1B Griffin Doersching 4-for-4, 2 HR (7); SS Jay Beshears 2-for-4, HBP; RHP Braden Nett IP, H, ER; RHP Tyler Morgan 3 IP, 3 K; RHP Bradgley Rodriguez 2 IP, 2 K; RHP David Morgan (S, 1) 1.2 IP, 1 H, 4 K

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps, who came into the game with only 24 homers through their first 50 games, powered up for three of them Sunday to drop the Midwest League’s top team. Griffin Doersching, playing about an hour from his hometown in suburban Milwaukee, hit a pair of towering homers as part of the first 4-for-4 game of his career. The big first baseman, coming off a brutal May when he managed just a .450 OPS, has homered in two straight games and now has seven on the year. … Tyler Robertson also got into the act with a solo shot for his fifth of the year. He also singled and drew a walk and has now hit in five straight and reached base in eight consecutive games. During that stretch, the athletic outfielder added 103 points to his OPS. … Braden Nett came off the IL and worked one inning in his first action in over a month. The hard-throwing righty gave up a solo homer but got through 17 pitches without issue. He’ll build back up with the TinCaps rather than a rehab stint in the desert. … Reliever David Morgan picked up his first save of the year, striking out four over 1.2 innings. The Orange County native got off to a rough start to the season, allowing 10 runs through his first 8.2 innings. Since then, Morgan has gotten back on track with a wicked slider, giving up three earned runs over 13 frames since the start of May. Opponents have hit just .170 against him, as he’s posted a 12:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in that stretch.

Storm 2, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 0

Key Stats: RHP Miguel Mendez 3 IP, 3 H, 3 K, 3 BB; LHP Javier Chacon 2 IP, 2 H, 3 K, BB, HBP; RHP Xavier Ruiz 3 IP, 2 H, K, 3 BB; DH Braedon Karpathios 1-for-3, HR (2); CF Nick Vogt 2-for-3

Prospect Watch: Five Storm pitchers combined on a shutout that wasn’t pretty but got the job done to finish a six-game series sweep. The Quakes had plenty of opportunities with eight hits and seven walks but went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Miguel Mendez got things started for Lake Elsinore, working out of a bases-loaded threat in the first and ultimately getting through three despite allowing three walks and as many hits. The wiry righty, who has yet to add much weight at 21 years old, has walked 21 in 20 innings this year. He has only made it past three innings in one of his eight starts, but he already shows big velocity that could take a jump if he ever fills out. … Lefty Javier Chacon picked up the win with two scoreless innings of his own. The 21-year-old from Cuba struck out three Quakes and is up to 40 punchouts in 29.2 innings of work on the year. … The Storm got all the offense they’d need when Braedon Karpathios bombed one off the wall in the left field corner and had it rebound back toward center field far enough that he was able to leg it out for an inside-the-park home run. The 20-year-old, who signed as an undrafted free agent out of community college in Maryland in 2022, has an incredibly patient approach at the plate, seeing more than 4.2 pitchers per plate appearance. That’s contributed to a 33.3% strikeout rate, but he has also drawn 37 walks to fuel a .370 on-base percentage. He’ll be asked to get a bit more aggressive on pitches which he can do damage against as the season progresses.
